bits and pieces

It's been a busy week here.

Megan started at her new school. She's in a "late" French Immersion program (as opposed to "early" French Immersion, which starts in kindergarten and which Calum is doing). So far she's enjoying it and has been eager enough to actually get up and get ready at a reasonable hour with a minimum amount of prodding. I'm enjoying this while it lasts. Her eagerness extends to homework, too, which she seems quite happy to jump into as soon as she gets home from school.

Calum is enduring the agony known as "gradual entry" for his kindergarten. This means that he's allowed to attend school for little tiny bits and pieces of time until next Wednesday, when he'll have a real day at school for the first time. This is not going over too well with our impatient little guy. Meanwhile Jeff and I are keeping our fingers crossed that he gets into the morning class, as this is something that remains undecided in the bizarre system they use at his school.

Calum had his eyes tested this morning. With his glasses on, he's now seeing 20/20 in both eyes. This means our efforts with the eye patch have been successful (on top of the surgery, which definitely helped). The pediatric opthalmologist wants us to continue patching for two hours a day and to come back in three months, at which point I'm hoping we can discontinue the eye patches altogether. Hurrah!

I saw an allergy specialist today and guess what! I'm allergic to wheat. I'm also allergic (to a lesser degree) to rice, corn, barley, (possibly other grains too, they only tested for those four) cow's milk (including cheese and yogurt) and chocolate. What is left to live for, I ask you? Fortunately these allergies are mild and though I know I'll feel much better if I avoid all those foods completely, I can cheat without ending up in the ER. I already knew about dairy products being a problem, but I am still "digesting" the news about needing to avoid all grains. All the gluten-free breads, muffins and such that I've been eating lately are made from rice and corn.

Meanwhile, another semester has started for me and this time around I'm taking precalculus. I had my first class yesterday and I'm hoping that it won't be too much of a challenge; I'm still trying to overcome my lingering math phobia which was brought on by the trauma of grade 11 math some years ago.

Megan needs help with the printer, so off I go. More soon, I promise!

Wow...the allergies are a real pain. Corn, wheat or dairy are in everything! How will you eat? I'm feeling extremely sorry for you.
