Spec-ial boy
Today Calum asked me, "Does everyone have glasses?" Because Megan wasn't around, I could get away with answering, "No, only special people." He seemed very pleased with that answer and informed me that he was very very special.
This week has been quite an experience as we get used to Calum's new vision-related needs... reminding him to put on his glasses when he gets up in the morning, making sure he doesn't take them off and leave them somewhere when we're out, helping him learn the somewhat treacherous task of walking and running with glasses on.
We've also been dealing with learning to use the eye patch therapy to train his left eye to work harder. A friend gave me oodles of information about amblyopia (lazy eye) and I've been visiting websites and reading up on it. We had a bit of a challenge finding the adhesive eye patches recommended by the opthalmologist, only to find that they are a real pain - Calum's hair sticks to them, they hurt to peel off, and they're very uncomfortable to wear. "Vicki, I am DYING with this thing. Do you hear me? I'm DYING!". I was able to track down a pharmacy not too far from here that sells a clever alternative, a cloth patch that actually slides onto the arm of the glasses, and the manufacturers actually had the sense to make them out of "cool" fabrics - he picked out a Spider-man patch and begged me to put it on him right there in the store.
