Brag time

Last week I took Calum to the library and picked up a couple of those "easy reader" type of books to see if he'd be interested. Lo and behold, he picked one up and read it on the bus home. He declared this book, Mine's the best by Crosby Bonsall, to be "really really funny" and proceeded to spend the next two days reading it over and over to himself and anyone else who would listen (mostly me and Jeff, and we are happy to oblige).

Yesterday while Jeff was undergoing his ordeal at the oral surgeon's, we went back to the library and picked up a pile more of these "easy readers". One of the coolest things about this development in Calum's life is that I can go back to some books that Megan has long since lost interest in, but I loved and miss. We've discovered that Cynthia Rylant has expanded the delightful "Henry and Mudge" series (which was a huge favourite of Megan's when she was at this age) to include a "Puppy Mudge" series of very, very simple books that Calum can actually read. We are so excited... he is moving forward at a wonderful pace, now, and last night read a large section of an Arnold Lobel book, which gives me hope that at some point Calum will no longer spurn Frog and Toad and I can revisit those delightful stories that Megan and I enjoyed so much during her preschool years.

hey, thanks for the heads-up about puppy Mudge! H is the most, uhm, stubborn/resistant/pain in the butt....emerging reader & he insists that most everything other than Bob books is too hard. And Bob books are boring. So there. Not gonna read anything..... argh. Well, I've done this before so it's not so rough 'cause I know this too shall pass. But puppy Mudge might tweak his interest b/e who can resist puppies?
