busy-ness

Here's a quick run-down of our last week.

Monday: My birthday. Yay me! I got some cool gifts from my family. Jeff managed to produce a lemon meringue pie that was 100% legal for my sadly restricted diet, and it was quite yummy, especially for his first attempt at making such a thing.

Tuesday: Halloween. The kids were very successful with their quest for candy this time around, and it seems like more of our neighbours are giving out candy each year because their trick or treat bags were full before we got through two streets. Nobody recognized either of their costumes; one lady thought Calum's Captain Underpants costume was a Red Riding Hood costume. Hmm.

Wednesday: We had "family photo night" at Calum's school. Apparently this is something most/all of the local public schools do as a fundraiser; you pay a small sitting fee, and set up an appointment at the school to have some photos taken. I think this is a fabulous idea - I hate the studios where you make an appointment and then have to wait anyway, with lots of bored kids running around near you. If any of the photos turn out I will see if I can post them here.

Thursday: I got to help at the book fair at Calum's school. This was fun, especially since it was the last day of the fair, so quite slow. One class of seventh graders came in for about twenty minutes and had an opportunity to browse and buy; I was quite amused to notice that not one out of thirty kids bought a book. They were very keen on the overpriced pens, pencils, erasers and bookmarks though. I suggested to my fellow book fair volunteer that the Parent Advisory Council should really just do a stationery fair, and forget the books.

Thursday evening was the enrollment ceremony at Megan's Girl Guide group. She got chosen to be a patrol leader, and is very proud of herself.

Friday: Because this was a 'slow' day, ie, the only thing on my calendar was my precalculus lecture, I spent the afternoon running errands. It rained torrentially and we had to drive along a flooded-out street on the way back from the university. This was a unique experience and I was very sorry not to have the camera with me.

Saturday: Tae Kwon Do for everyone (except me, because I need to watch Calum during the teen/adult class which Megan and Jeff take). It was still raining torrentially in the morning, so Megan and I went out and got soaked running between the library and the Asian mall where I like to buy my produce. I spent the rest of the day studying for an upcoming midterm.

Today: More studying, and I also managed to do a whole bunch of gift shopping. My goal this year is to not buy any gifts at the mall! Well, ok, I might have to do a bit of shopping at the aforementioned Asian mall, a useful source of various items that are of interest to my Japanophile daughter. Megan managed to clear off the floor in her room, so Jeff went to IKEA and finally replaced the loft bed we took down in the spring (she's been sleeping on her mattress on the floor since then!) Hey, anyone want to buy a really nice twin loft bed?! We still haven't sold the damn thing!!

Now I've studied so much that my eyes feel like they're going to pop out of my head, so I'm going to sit down and finally watch this week's episode of House while sewing badges onto Megan's Guide camping hat.
