a milestone

I've been waiting for the day that I would have to take Calum into the ER for stitches, and yesterday it finally came. (You notice I wasn't waiting for the day I'd have to do this with Megan; not only is she extremely disinclined to be physically active, she is also super-super careful.) Last night while playing soccer with some friends in the hallway of our apartment, Calum tripped and bumped the back of his head on the corner of a wall. the cut wasn't long or deep, but it was just long enough and open enough that even after a couple of hours it hadn't closed up and was still bleeding. So off to the ER I went, and after only an hour's wait (which is less time than I've had to wait, sometimes, for Calum's pediatrician even when I have an appointment) we got in to see a doctor.

Calum is now the proud bearer of one stitch, buried in the hair on the back of his head, and he was very pleased with the whole affair, though he was not all that thrilled with the actual sensation of having the stitch put in. When Jeff came to pick us up from the hospital well past 11 pm, Calum hopped into the car and exclaimed, "My head got fixed!"

By the way, he objected to me taking him to the ER to see a doctor. "This isn't an emergency... I'm not all smashed up!" I had to explain several times that this was the only place that we could find a doctor who was working late at night before he let go of this issue.
