our new toy!

A few months ago I was very pleased to learn that TiVo is now allowing Canadians to legally subscribe to its service. The catch was that we were expected to import our own TiVo boxes, and since we technically have no import allowance when leaving the country for less than 24 hours, that meant if I bought a TiVo box on one of my frequent trips to Bellingham or Seattle, I'd have been stuck paying duties and taxes on the damn thing when I crossed the border back into Canada. I hope/expect that at some point in the next couple of years, TiVo will start selling the boxes here but I'm not sure when that will happen. There are similar DVR type products available for sale here (though most of them are tied into cable HDTV subscriptions, which we don't have) and most people don't seem to know about this less expensive alternative.

Anyway, on Thursday I picked up a friend who'd been out of the country for a week so I was finally able to pick up a TiVo. Last night Jeff managed to get it up and running, so now we can start recording shows, skipping through commercial breaks, pausing and rewinding things that we are watching, etc. It should be fun!

Do let us know whether you like it. It sounds intriguing. We don't have cable at all b/e I actively discourage tv watching but if TiVo works as well as it's supposed to, that might be something that would tempt us later on....

I am so envious. Since I rarely watch live TV but tape almost everything this sounds appealing. Especially since my VCR tapes when it feels like it and refused to when it doesn't.

Keep me posted on how you like it.
