curr-azy weekend

This past weekend was one of the busiest we've had in ages. I'd been hoping for a bit of a "break" because the previous two weekends were spent studying for midterms, but alas, it was instead a chance to catch up on things that I had put off while studying.

Friday evening you already know about; Saturday morning was spent at Taekwondo classes. Megan proudly showed off her yellow belt, along with her two friends who are in the same class and tested at the same time. After getting home and eating some lunch, we headed out to run a few errands in the torrential rain. Our final destination was the local IKEA store, where we needed to pick up a pair of badly needed bookcases for the kids' expanding book collections. This took a very long time; the store was extremely busy and we made it longer by purchasing an "as-is" bookshelf for Megan. For the sake of a few scratches, we saved $35, but it meant Jeff had to disassemble the shelving unit in the store before it would fit into the back of our minivan.

After we got home, I quickly threw together some dinner while Jeff unloaded the van, but alas, he discovered that the shelving unit we'd bought for Calum had a big hole in it (I guess we were too tired to really notice this in the store - all I saw was a tear in the cardboard, and I didn't think too much about it at the time). So on Sunday, after we slept most of the morning away due to the time change, we headed back out to IKEA to exchange it for an intact bookshelf. I had this bright idea that maybe I could save time by dropping Jeff and Megan off to stand in line at the return counter while I went across the street to pick up a few groceries, but it took Calum and me nearly an hour to grab the six items on our shopping list. The prices are low, but ugh... how I hate the Superstore.

By the time we finally got home (again, in torrential rain) on Sunday, most of the afternoon was gone and we spent the rest of our time putting together the things we'd bought, cooking and eating dinner. A relaxing break it wasn't, but it was worth it to see Calum's bouncy excitement after Jeff put his new bookshelf together and we started putting all the books into it.

(Oh, and as a nice illustration of Murphy's Law, Calum's ancient bedside lamp finally bit the dust yesterday, so now I must contemplate yet another trip out to IKEA in the near future. This time, however, I'll do whatever is in my power to avoid going on a weekend...)

First, congrats on the yellow belt--she sure is a big young woman now.

Second, major vibes on the furniture issues. Much as I love Ikea, it sure takes a long time to get stuff "right" there.

Congratulations to Megan!
& whoa - yes, avoid Ikea on weekends. You know the best time to go there? Around 7 or 8 pm on Mon-Wed. Easy breezy. Seems like I've been living in Ikea & Home Depot with our kitchen reno so I've had lots of opportunities to find the best times! ttfn
