Be ye warned!

Yesterday I took a chicken out of the oven midway through the roasting process in order to add the all-important potatoes to the pan so they could roast in the chicken juice (the potatoes are the real reason we eat roast chicken at least once a week). Shortly after I set the pan down on the stovetop, the glass baking dish exploded and pieces of glass went flying in every direction. I know a lot of you will be doing some serious holiday cooking and baking in the next few weeks, so I'm passing along the warning that Pyrex baking dishes can react this way to drastic changes in temperature. I did a little bit of google searching and learned that this can happen under a variety of circumstances, including inside the dishwasher or oven, and that the 9x13 size baking dish seems especially prone to this behaviour (yep, that's the size I was using). I was wearing oven mitts and shoes, and there was a foil tent over my chicken, so I was not injured by the flying glass, and luckily no young person was standing nearby either. I suggest taking similar precautions any time you're cooking with a glass baking dish. I'm not a huge fan of metal baking pans so I'm thinking of changing to stone now...
