a good day

So, between having to drop our van off at the dealership *again* (this is the third time in a month that the brakes have made alarming knocking noises) and me trying to finish everyone's halloween costume, Calum and I dropped everything this afternoon and took the skytrain to the mall. I had such a lovely day with him - we had some good chats, I helped him with his reading, we sat down to eat lunch together and did our shopping and he was friendly and cheerful and not silly or overly energetic. I realize that he's going off to school in less than a year now and so our ability to spend long hours just hanging out together is going to be hampered. His babyhood has slipped away and he's more and more of a child and less of a preschooler all the time. He talks in full, articulate sentences, he is figuring out how to read, he is an adept video gamer, has an active imagination, a more mature sense of humor and is even able to remember his manners once in a while.

I think the thing I tried to imprint on my memory the most today is the feeling of his little hand in mine. For some reason, when he was younger, he hated having his hand held - I think that was just part of his general intense dislike of being restrained in any way - but gradually over the past year or so he has started to insist on doing so while he walks along beside me and I love it. He may be a bigger boy with a bigger penis than mine, but his hands are still soft, chubby and dimpled and it's just a great feeling to walk along next to your small child and have him slip his soft, chubby, dimpled hand into yours.

What a lovely "Mom" moment. Enjoy it while you can. I remember my boy holding my hand well beyond the time I'd thought he would and thinking "I wonder when he's going to figure out this just isn't cool"

Awww, that brought a tear to my eye. I'm lucky enough to have a 13 year old who still likes to give me hugs and kisses. I will enjoy it for as long as it lasts :-)
